Who We Are And Why We Do What We Do

We are pretty much just a normal family of four. My husband, as you can see from the picture, is totally outnumbered.

Even our dog is a girl!! Here she is hugging her teddy bear blanket.

There are two things that make our family unique. One is that my husband was born and raised in Poland. The second is that we homeschool. Well, we only have one left to homeschool. Our oldest daughter is in college now.

Other than that, we are pretty normal.

Why We Started Study Skills For All Ages

Study Skills For All Ages was birthed from the experiences we had with our own children and their struggles in school.

I know, I know, why were they struggling in school if we homeschool??

Let me briefly explain. Our oldest daughter went to public school through 6th grade, private school for 7th and then we brought her home starting in 8th grade.

During her time in the school system, she was never taught study skills. I was also never taught study skills. Therefore, even though I knew something was missing with her, I could not, for the life of me, figure out what it was.

Yes, I did look for help from others, including professionals, but no one was ever able to say that what she needed was better study skills.

At the same time, I was watching my youngest daughter, who is an absolute sponge when it comes to soaking up information, start to struggle as we got into the older elementary grades.

I knew something had to be done!! or I would simply lose my mind ;-)

The breakthrough for us really came after our oldest daughter was most of the way through her first year of college. And it did not even come through her, but through our youngest daughter.

I was meeting with an educational consultant, Deb, about our youngest and she told me this: "You have to teach her with visuals, she is a visual learner!"

And I said (stupidly, I might add) "But, she likes Legos, I thought that was an engineering-type mind."

Deb: "No, that is visual-spatial, she is a right brainer and needs to learn with visuals."

As I began to investigate the right-brain thing, study skills kept popping up. This is because once you start looking into how right-brainers learn, you start to realize that there are so many DIFFERENT ways to gather information and make it work for how you learn. Who knew?? I sure didn't!

And this all has to do with...you guessed it...study skills!

It quickly became obvious to me that what my very smart, yet frustrated oldest daughter needed was better study skills.

In fact, I am pretty sure that if we had not empowered our oldest with good study skills, she may not have returned to college. She was so frustrated and upset with her grades.

It Really Works

Since learning some of the study skills that we will show you on this site, her grades have gone from barely passing to one B and the rest straight A!!! This stuff really, really works!!

That's Us In A Nutshell

So that's a little about us, who we are and why we began Study Skills For All Ages. We firmly believe that as you apply what you learn on this site, learning struggles can be turned into learning victories.

There is absolutely no doubt in our minds that this is true. Our kids are living proof of this and we know that whether you are here for yourself or your children, you will learn skills that will empower you and help you succeed in ways you never thought possible.

Sharing What We've Learned

Now, it is a passion of mine to help people understand how to make learning easy. You may be trying to help your child, yourself, or someone else. No matter the situation, I truly believe that Study Skills For All Ages will shed light on the mystery of learning. Because for some people, learning really is a mystery, they just don't get how to make things stick. That's what we are here for!!
